Intelligent Movement

What we do at CrossFit Virtuosity is teach you how to move better.  We draw from a wide variety of gymnastics and weightlifting movements and incorporate them in ways that make you stronger and more fit.  We do not use machines.  We use the body and we use weights and we train like people used to train before exercising got dumbed down for the masses.  We believe that the human body is meant to express itself in beautiful, intelligent and powerful ways.  Come try it and experience your body in a new way.

Prescription

The CrossFit prescription is “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement.” Functional movements are universal motor recruitment patterns; they are performed in a wave of contraction from core to extremity; and they are compound movements—i.e., they are multi-joint. They are natural, effective, and efficient locomotors of body and external objects. But no aspect of functional movements is more important than their capacity to move large loads over long distances, and to do so quickly.

Skill Training

At CrossFit Virtuosity we believe the magic is in the movements and pursuing more challenging movement skills is a worthwhile endeavor.  To that end every class has a skill practice component.  For example, one month we may focus on handstands which are a great skill and require strength and balance and increase an athlete’s proprioceptive abilities.  There are numerous drills that can be done to work on handstands and every time you come to CrossFit Virtuosity you may work on a different drill but all with the same goal of improving your handstands.

Methodology

All workouts are designed and lead by a coach. The coach leads clients through increasingly challenging athletic movements, guiding people of all ability levels toward improved health and athletic ability. Our clients say the personal coaching and the group workouts are fun and challenging. Clients' sense of fun and variety (never knowing what the workout will be until they arrive) keeps them coming back, so that they get the results they want.

Coaching vs. Personal Training

Most personal trainers rely on their clients to not think. They are happy when their clients leave the gym and have no idea what they did. They also count on their clients not quite achieving their goals.  It’s called job security.  If your client never achieves his or her goal, and never really knows what to do in or out of the gym for a workout, he or she will always need you!

At CrossFit Virtuosity, when you hire us, you are hiring a coach. Our job is to help facilitate your listening, thinking, learning, being aware and being responsible. We guide and steer you on a course and are there to help you maintain your heading when a “storm” throws you in the wrong direction, however, it is clear from the start of our relationship that YOU are ultimately responsible for your health, fitness and vitality. Our instruction focuses on movement techniques and skills, physical conditioning, and the development of healthy workout, eating habits, and self-discipline, so that after a period of time, you’ve got all the essential elements, experience and confidence to make it through your life with health, fitness and vitality.

Classes

All classes are one hour long.  The classes follow a basic outline: warmup; skill practice and strength training; Workout Of the Day (WOD); cooldown and stretch.  We have two levels of classes but they both cover very similar material and do similar workouts.  The level one class is merely a scaled down version of the Level 2 class.  If a member finds herself in the wrong level class it is simple to adjust the level up or down to suit the member’s needs.

Space

The first thing you will notice when you walk into CrossFit Virtuosity.  There are no shoes allowed.  Our training is more like that at a dojo, gymnastics gym or yoga studio.  Our training space is sacred and we try to keep it clean.  The next thing you will notice is that there is very little equipment.  We train our bodies as naturally as we can with as little equipment as we can.  The magic is in the movements not in the machines.  At CrossFit Virtuosity, our emphasis is on space - space to move, to jump, to lift, to balance, to climb, to tumble, or in other words, train as an athlete, unencumbered by equipment, people and/or other “stuff” in the way.
