About

CrossFit

My Gym from Patrick Cummings at CrossFit New England.

We think this captures it pretty well:

“Crossfit is a cult, or a fitness movement, and possibly a sport. It could be all three, or if you throw in a lifestyle, all four. An all-encompassing open-source fitness movement involving gymnastics, Olympic lifting, aerobic work, and if the mood is right, whatever coach feels like putting on the website as the workout of the day. It is all done very quickly, and with great intensity, and if you are not prepared, it will kindly help you remember what you had for lunch by forcibly reintroducing it to you. If that doesn’t happen, then you will likely end up on the floor praying for oxygen.” — Spencer Hall

Wikipedia also has a good write-up:

“CrossFit is a strength and conditioning fitness methodology. Its stated goal is to create ‘the quintessential athlete: equal parts gymnast, Olympic weightlifter, sprinter, rower and 800 meter runner.’ Crossfit is not sport-specific and promotes broad and general overall physical fitness.”

Our Philosophy
We train like people used to train before exercise got dumbed down for the masses. We believe that the human body is meant to express itself in beautiful, intelligent and powerful ways. We don’t use machines; we draw from a wide variety of gymnastics and weightlifting movements and incorporate them in ways that make you stronger and more fit.

Community
Virtuosity is a community. We’re here to help you get fitter and stronger, and we expect that as you get comfortable, you’ll help other people get fitter and stronger. This ain’t your big-box gym — you can’t be anonymous here. We’ll be keeping tabs on your progress and are always available to help you design your training and nutrition to achieve optimal results.

Top Notch Coaching
Virtuosity’s head coach, Keith Wittenstein, is New York City’s only Level 3 certified CrossFit trainer. He has been personally selected by Rip, Tucker, Martone, and Burgener to assist with coaching at their respective certification courses (barbell, gymnastics, kettlebell, and olympic lifting, respectively.) Virtuosity’s athletes get world-class coaching. We’ll ask you about your goals, pay attention to your progress, and give you personalized advice to get you to the top of your game.

Training Facility
The Brooklyn Barbell Club provides 5,000 square feet of mayhem space on a cement ground floor. Lift weights, flip tires, drag sleds, swing sledgehammers, run around the 400m track conveniently located 3 blocks away… and tons more crazy fun stuff! This is an authentic CrossFit experience.

Progress Tracking
You’ll be expected to keep track of your workouts, either online, or in a notebook that we provide for you when you begin. All of our workouts are completed for time, reps, or max weight, so you’ll be able to track your progress and see yourself improving as you go — you’ll be amazed how much faster and stronger you’ll get if you stick with it, even if you’re working out just twice a week.

Zero To Hero
CrossFit workouts are scalable to any level — we have clients who are old, young, big, small, and everything in between. Come down to one of our free intro classes and see for yourself!

Endurance Training
Are you already a marathon runner? Triathlete? Cyclist? Swimmer? CrossFit training can get you great results fast. The combination of interval training and weight lifting will make you stronger and faster — you’ll be amazed how much easier running, or biking, or swimming seems after a few weeks of training with us — without devoting long hours to distance training!
