The Spirit of the Game

“We are what we repeatedly do; excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” —Aristotle

Seth Godin discusses The Spirit of the Game. He advocates working the system over trying to beat the system. I think that is good advice. What we do at CrossFit is try to work the system. We define the game of fitness and we set out to win the game. The rules are simple: Eat right; Do the WOD; and Rest. There are some more details like use good form and full range of motion. Scale things appropriately so you can go fast and hard and safe. When you are trying to work the system it is transparent. We post our WODs and we post our food journals and we let everybody view our efforts and our results. We stay committed to excellence and are proud of our achievements. However those that try to beat the system rarely show their work. Steroids are a great example of trying to beat the system. Using drugs to get ahead is outside the rules. Thus there is no transparency and there is always the fear of getting caught. Learn to work the system and enjoy the spirit of the game.
