Farewell, Deja Vu

15234652736_7df8179ccd_zIt is with great sadness that we bid farewell this week to our dear friend and longtime coach Gregg “Deja Vu” Martino. Gregg first came to CFV as a fresh-faced NYU student, and quickly caught our attention as an outstanding athlete and all-around smart cookie. We hired him as an intern and ever since have struggled to find a replacement with his cardboard twining finesse. Gregg took naturally to coaching, and quickly rose through the ranks from assistant coach to a spot on our all-star team of lead coaches. In his spare time he managed to talk someone into letting him onto the CrossFit HQ Seminar Staff, and has spent many weekends since traveling the globe teaching people how to coach CrossFit.

We dedicate yesterday’s “Deja Vu” workout to Gregg, as an homage to his long love-hate relationship with “Fran”. They first met in Gregg’s first months of CrossFit, when he was frustrated to find that “Fran” isn’t as simple as it looks on paper. Dissatisfied with his initial time, Gregg returned to the gym a couple days later to take another shot at it. Things didn’t go as he would have liked the second time, so Gregg rested approximately 5 minutes and tried again. Needless to say this was not the most fruitful strategy. Gregg called it quits for the day but did get in one final fourth attempt before the week was out. “Fran” did not cooperate, and we believe Gregg continues his flirtation with a competitive “Fran” time to this day. You all got to experience double-“Fran” and feel Gregg’s pain yesterday!

Gregg is leaving us to take a Head Coach position at the new CrossFit ONE Nation in Needham, Massachusetts. Despite the fog of depression that settled in the minute he left, we truly wish him the very best for this exciting new chapter in his career, and can’t wait to see the awesome gym that he’ll be building. No matter how far he goes, he will always remain a part of the Virtuosity family. Remember to call in on him if you’re ever in the greater Boston area!

Will country Tuesdays be lost forever? Will the Kettlebell Kitchen refrigerator have a lot more room now? Will the bathrooms smell fresher? I miss Gregg.
