Part of the fun of CrossFit is the competitiveness of the group class. It’s “3. 2. 1. Go!” and everybody is busting their asses and sweating and sharing in the agony and the laughter. It’s a rush. It’s one of the best things about the CrossFit experience.
However, there are some limitations to the group setting. For some people “3. 2. 1. Go!” is terrifying because they’re caught in the middle of a storm of bodies, barbells, loud music and what might appear to be utter chaos. For other people, skill and/or strength acquisition has plateaued during group sessions.
It’s sometimes thought of as a luxury, but in reality private training is often a necessity. One-on-one fine tuning can give you more confidence that you’re doing things correctly and safely during class, power you through your sticking points and help you reach that next level.
The coaches here at CrossFit Virtuosity are specialists. We know and understand human movement and CrossFit and how to help you navigate a little better through the confusion and chaos. A few sessions can make a huge difference in your progress.
How do you know if you need a one-on-one session? Here is a list of good reasons to see someone.
Have you had any injuries or surgeries in the past? It does not matter if you think “that was a long time ago.” The truth is that most people that have had an injury or a surgery have developed compensating techniques to work around that injury. Chances are that the healing process wasn’t complete and that we need to look at your movement and see if you are still compromised by that injury.
This is especially true if you have lost range of motion in a joint due to that injury or are still experiencing some pain or swelling.
Have you recently hurt yourself? Many people use an injury as an excuse to stop training altogether. That’s foolish. Use the time wisely to continue training and learn how to work around the injury and rehab it properly. A broken leg can be an opportunity for you to finally learn to do muscle ups and a broken arm can be the impetus for a 400lb squat.
Yes, CrossFit is supposed to be uncomfortable and you are supposed to be sore. However, chronic pain is not good. If it always hurts when you put your arm over your head, then you should probably have a coach look at your form and see if we can get you to move without pain. If every time you deadlift your back really hurts, then maybe you should see someone about your form.
You Feel Totally Uncoordinated
If you feel like a complete fool whenever a certain exercise comes up or generally feel uncoordinated in every class, then you should get together with a coach and work on stuff. You may be the slowest and weakest person in class, but you shouldn’t feel like you don’t belong. Some people take longer than others to “get it.” That’s natural. It wouldn’t hurt to speed the process along by getting some coaching and learning the moves at a slower pace.
You Have an Issue
Some people are really tight and need help stretching. Some people are really overweight and need help with their nutrition. Some people are really old and have never touched a barbell before. There are many people that have special needs and if you are one of those people, you should probably seek out some individual coaching to help you deal with your particular issue.
You Are Invited
If a coach says, “hey you should book a session with me to work on that.” Do it. We are not trying to sell you something you don’t need. You’re already a member of the gym and coming to classes, but if we suggest you come see us, that means we think we can help you.
You Have Specific Goals
If you’re training for an event or just want to hit a certain weight by your wedding day, you should get in touch with a coach and get some help planning to meet that goal. It always helps to have a training goal and that goal should be personal and important to you, but enlisting help in meeting that goal is the best way to ensure success.
